Social Engagement and "God-With-Us"

An article by Ed Broadbent is linking poverty concerns in Canada with a lack of both social engagement and democratic participation among Canadians. His point is that we as citizens are not doing our part to steer our government in the direction of compassion and justice…..Broadbent is trying to awaken us to the power and responsibility we have as citizens.

Social equity works, and it works well for everyone in society. Social inequity causes harm and it harms us all.

The growing gap between rich and poor demonstrates that we, as citizens, are not doing our part to steer our government in the direction of compassion and justice.  It is in this context that Advent, the season in which we seek to be more attentive to God-with-us, is inviting us to engage the sacred power and responsibility that we have to transform our societal patterns into the patterns of God’s Reign.
